Nothing specific in my researches into the British community in Brazil, but agree that there seems to be a connection. You have probably seen reference to "Amyatt Joseph Chamberlin Buxton of Brazil, esq" in a property conveyance of 1861 in the Devon Record Office

Have you traced his naval career yet? The RN had vessels stationed at Rio de Janeiro through most of the 19th century.
