Hello,
I am looking for any information relating to my great-great grandfather, Justino Ferreira, who was born in Brazil around 1867, probably in Rio de Janeiro, and his father Pedro.
Justino emigrated to Australia, according to his naturalisation certificate dated 1912, in 1877 (arriving in Fremantle, Western Australia on December 24) on a ship called 'S.S. Australind.' Unfortunately, the 'Australind' was not built until some years later, so either he gave the wrong date or the wrong ship name. I am in the process of getting someone in Western Australia to search through the passenger lists to find the right ship and date.
What I would like to know is if there is a way to search Brazilian records to find any details on Justino and his father Pedro - such as marriage and birth records, or departure records for Rio in 1877? Are there any online records available?
How were births, deaths and marriages registered in Brazil before 1888 - did they have civil registration system, or was it only done through the churches?
