Hello Peter,

Firstly, thank you so much for your reply and your advice.

Annie was actually Annie Pearce in the 1881 census. She married Thomas Wolstenholme Neal in March 1885 in Kennington, London. There was a son Herbert Thomas Neal born a few months later in 1885. Thomas Wolstenholme Neal stayed in the UK (he appears in both 1891 and 1901 census)so we understand that Annie and her son Herbert Thomas Neal emigrated to Brazil between 1896 and 1890. Herbert had a son Silas who only spoke Portugese so presumably Annie remarried a Portugese speaking man.

I have checked the ships list link you kindly referred me to but unfortunately I cannot identify a suitable ship and I don't know the exact date. Most in that period landed at Rio or Santos according to the list so Annie could have been on one of those but none are showing as from the UK. Do you have any ideas on a suitable next step please?

Also I went into the Ministry of Justice website and followed step by step what you advised. When I clicked on what appears to be the "search" button I didn't understand anything in the box as it was in Portugese (you mentioned a knowledge of it was needed). Do you know what the message back was saying? I had gone Parana, Curitiba and marriages (thanks for the translation) but never got as far as a name (either Neal or Pearce). Any help you can provide on understanding the process a little more would be much appreciated.

Many thanks
Carl
