If Aristides and Adelaide were married in Brazil it would probably have been a catholic and/or civil ceremony.Their marriage appears neither as one registered with British consuls, nor in the marriage register of Christ Church, Rio de Janeiro (the Anglican church).
Adelaide Hammond seems to have born in about 1898 in the hamlet of Ugley, Essex (a few miles north of London Stansted Airport) where her father was a farm horsekeeper. It would be intriguing to learn how a farm-girl from Essex came to be sailing to Brazil from Liverpool at age 18 to meet her boyfriend's family!I think that the ESSEQUIBO voyage of 1915 must have been quite early in the year, as later in 1915 she was taken over as a hospital ship.
It looksd as if Aristides worked as a seaman.Search iof the Ellis Island site reveals an "Aristides Da Costa", assistant steward, arriving at New York from Buenos Aires on the Lamport & Holt liner VERDI on 9 Aug 1917.He had signed on for the voyage on 19 May 1917 at Liverpool.A few days later in August the VERDI sailed New York for Liverpool, but never arrived. She torpedoed by U 53 when 115 miles NW of Ireland on 22 August.Fortunately, all but six on board were saved.Aristides is described as a 29-year-old Brazilian.
Some interesting clues here!
