I have recently been researching some of the registers held at the British Church in Rio de Janeiro. They include the surviving registers from the British mining settlement at Gongo Soco, Minas Gerais (they cover 1830 to 1857, though with gaps).

There is an entry on 25/12/1830 for the baptism at Gongo of George Philip BOWE, the son of George & Catherine BOWE (George was a carpenter at the mine). The baptism was carried out by Rev W J F Dodgson, Chaplain at Gongo Soco.

So if the birth of 1828 in Rio de Janeiro is correct, it looks as if he was born in RJ while the couple were en route to the mine. Does this accord with your understanding of their emigration?

Can you tell me anything about this family, their origins and how long they stayed in Brazil?

David
