It is perhaps worth noting that the city of Recife was commonly called "Pernambuco" in the 19th century, at least by foreign communities.Thus British official records recording a birth or death at/in "Pernambuco" would mean the city; generally other places in the State (actually still a 'Province' in 1818, I think) would be specifically identified.
The same applied to the "cities" of Maranham, Santa Caterina and ParĂ¡ - and maybe some others.
