Dear Friends,
I have been looking for the surname BAMAT. My Great Grandmother name was Elisabeth Bamat. She was born in 1855 at Thann, Haute-Rhin, Alsace, France at the time as now, daughter of Sigismond Joseph Bamat and Berlie Mack. My mother told me that Elisabeth considered herself as a German woman. Looking at phone directories in France I have found that the name Mack is very common in Haute-Rhin and Bas-Rhin, but I have not found any Bamat there or elsewere in France. In Switzerland there are many Bamats, as well as in the United States.
I am Brazilian. My Grandfather, Pierre Montet, son of Elisabeth Bamat and Jean Montet, was born in Paris in 1879. All the family came to Brazil in 1896.
I would very much appreciate if you could say something about the Bamat surname.
