The Dutch controlled parts of the northeast of Brazil from more of less 1630 to 1654, mostly on what is now the state of Pernambuco (capital: Recife).

When the Dutch left, many went to other colonies in the Caribbean (Curaçao) and the area around New York (then known as New Amsterdam). They had received enthusiastic support from the "conversos" or new christians (Portuguese jews who had been forcefully converted) who lived in Pernambuco. Most of these people left with the Dutch since staying around meant death as collaborators.

From New Amsterdam, some Brazilian/Portuguese jews went to Newport, seduced by the founder of the State of Rhode Island, Roger Williams, who guaranteed complete religious freedom to anybody settling there. There they founded the oldest synagogue in the US: the Touro Synaguoge (http://www.tourosynagogue.org/)

Perhaps you are a descendant of one of these people but you'll have to go back some 100 years from your gg grandmother's birth to be sure.

Good luck,

Nelson
