An 1850 Cornelius Brazee Conundrum
Posted by: Bruce Davis (ID *****0422) Date: September 14, 2008 at 09:13:07

The 1850 census for Alford, Berkshire, Mass lists the following (indexed as 'Brazer' on Ancestry):

Descendants of Cornelius Brazee

1        Brazee, Cornelius b: Abt. 1778 in NY, age 72 in 1850 Census: 1850 Alford, Berkshire, Massachusetts                     Occupation: 1850 farmer
.              +Sally b: Abt. 1781 in Connecticut, age 69 in 1850
...       2        Brazee, Amy E b: Abt. 1819 in Massachusetts, age 31 in 1850
The 1850 census for Egremont, Berkshire, Mass lists the following (Indexed as Buyce on Ancestry):

Descendants of Cornelius Brazee

1        Brazee, Cornelius b: Abt. 1790 in NY, age 60 in 1850 Census: 1850 Egremont, Berkshire, Massachusetts                     Occupation: 1850 looks like 'mine'
.              +Sarah b: Abt. 1790 in NY, age 60 in 1850
...       2        Brazee, Amy b: Abt. 1810 in NY, age 40 in 1850
Alford and Egremont in Berkshire County, Mass are separate from each other by 3-4 miles.

My contention is that the two records apply to one family, and that the census taker from one town visited the family in 1850, while the census taker from the other town probably obtained census information on the family from friends, relatives, or neighbors.

I'm looking for two kinds of information here:

(1) Opinion - Was there one Cornelius Brazee family in the Alford/Egremont area in 1850 or two? If one, what is the most accurate set of birth dates? This is an election year. Vote early.

(2) Facts - Are you familiar with this family? Who were any of Cornelius Brazee's other children, siblings, parents? What was Sarah/Sally's maiden name? Where was Cornelius Brazee in the years preceding 1850?

Thanks in advance for your help. All help appreciated.
