Bruce- FYI. This is my direct line (back to the original immigrant), just in case it sheds some light for you. Though my family utilized the BRESEE spelling, old census and other records often had other variations. By the way, in my last message to you I said "Davenport Co. NY"- sorry that should be Davenport, the city, in Delaware County NY. My line (Albert Bresee b. 1849 in Davenport was son of John C. Bresee noted below). Albert moved from Davenport abt 1870 to IL, IA and then to MO but most of his siblings stayed in NY.
********
1 John C. Bresee was born Davenport, Delaware Co.NY 7 Sep 1807.He married Catherine OLMSTEAD in NY, ABT 1834.He married second Henrietta WALDRUFF Delaware Co. NY, AFT 1862.John Bresee died 11 Feb 1889 Davenport, Delaware Co. NY, at 81 years of age.
2 Christopher I. Bresee married Agnes ROSSMAN b. abt 1781.Christopher was born Berkshire Co. MA 29 Sep 1776.and died AFT 1840 Delaware Co. NY.
3 Johannes C. Bresee was born Linlithgo, Columbia Co.NY 28 Aug 1751.He married (Elner) Elizabeth ROSSMAN(1752-1832) ABT 1775.Johannes died AFT 1832 NY?. They migrated from MA to Hillsdale, Dutchess Co. NY and then west to Delaware Co. NY.
4 Christophel Bresee was born Albany, NY 26 Jan 1709.He married Agnesa Flora ROSSMAN Tarbush, NY, 9 Nov 1737.Christophel died 1789 W. Stockbridge, Berkshire Co. NY. We believe Christopher and wife Agnes and his brother Hendrick and wife Eliz. Schurtz in 1753 lived west of Sheffield on Mount Washington in the disputed area called the GORE. It was a strip of land between the boundaries of MA and NY that both claimed. Many violent disputes took place over many years. Of interest- other families living near them included Olmstead, Hallenbeck, Spoor and Ingersoll, names which married into the Bresee line.
5 Andries Bresee was born Coxsackie, Greene Co. NY ABT 1683.He married Engeltje CLAEW( b.1688)in Albany NY, 13 Jul 1707.Andries died 3 Jul 1767 in NY, at 84 years of age.
6 Christophel Bresee was born HOLLAND or FRANCE ABT 1646 and married Christeanna CLAESJENS.(Many of the early French and German immigrants had migrated to Holland to avoid persecution and from there came to America.) Some fellow Bresee researchers believe Christophel landed in Salem MA. After Salem they moved to Albany Co. NY, then Reuphian Kill near Livingston Manor, Columbia Co. In Christopher's day Albany Co. included Greene Co. on the West side of the Hudson River. Apparently Christophel made an agreement with Jan Van Loon for the lease of a farm called Loonenburgh (now Athens, NY) on March 11, 1684. This probably was not renewed as VanLoon sold about 600 acres to Robt. Livingston and became known as the Livingston Manor.
Our branch of the Bresee's lived for nearly a hundred years in and near Livingston Manor as tenant farmers. It is said we started the towns of Great Barrington, MA; Pittsford, VT; Stockbridge, MA; and Egremont.
