I do know that John was a captain. Probably a sea captain.
They moved to Bedford as refugees from Civil War from Amelia or Powhatan. You might find records in a different county because of boundary changes. It could be Henrico or Chesterfield.

There was an old mill(Luckadoo mill) on the current Amelia/Powhatan border that was owned by the family for a many years. There is a book published about old homes that describes the area and the mill.
