My grandmother was a Brayton. My second cousin who is a Brayton was in contact w/the author of the Brayton genealogy. He was never able to trace Francis back any further than his first appearance in Portsmouth, 28 Nov 1642, when he "was recieved as an inhabitant, gave his engagement unto the government & propunded for a lot of land." I have found the name to have originated in Essex, England, but that doesn't mean that's where he is from. I have been chasing his orgins myself for some 12 years now with no luck. The original record above gave his name as Francis Bratton, which is another way to look. I had hoped he had come originally from Mass. prior to removing to R.I., but no luck there either. He does not show up on any of the passengers list from that period that are still extant.
