Hello Charlene:

I am approaching Joseph from "the bottom up" I can with certainty trace back to a Charles Brayton, who was born in Hemmingford, Canada about 1812. Whil in Hemmingford last year, I acquired copies of militia pay records of 1838, which showed thre Braytons, Stanford, Joseph, and Charles. Earlier a Comfort had dies at eight years old , th eson of Comfort and Ruth Brayton. Given that hte only Brayton in that community (it was chaotic in some ways, with American loyalist "squatters", English and French all coming into the area) old enough to have been the father, I am assuming he was the father of the three boys. Also, Charles said in the 1880 census that he was born in Canada and his father was born in Vermont. I believe Joseph had a farm in Vermont that was taken away after the revolution.

Anyway, in Malone, the Franklin County record had a signatue of Charles and it matched. So I am pretty sure about Comfort. I am guessing that there weren't multiple Comfort Braytons in that part of th world, though I would love to have better confirmation of his parents. Someday I hope to get to Rutland and see what's there. Any more data you have on that would be appreciated.

I have access to "the Brayton Books", that is how I linked Comfort to Joseph.

There are several people researching the Stanford line. He also had a son Comfort, who went by the name Charles when he left New York for Ohio. They have communicated through the forum also. I alos am intouch with folks researching my line up through their maternal line.

This stuff is not of general interest, so feel free to contact me directly at
