This is OUR Brautigam History.
Born in Germany February 18, 1804 as Carl Adam Brautigam in Langenbruecken, Karlsruhe, Baden, Germany.
There is not much known of Charles early life. The Brautigam's were of the Catholic faith.Charles was born and raised during a period of time when the people of Prussia (Germany) were under extreme sovereign rule and religious persecution. Many of the war lords and warring factions were trying to rise to the top and establish a unified Germany. It was during this period of time Charles married his first wife Regina Schaeffer.Regina died in 1836.
In 1840 Charles and his second wife Catherine and Regina's six kids and one of theirs left for America.During that time the main mode of travel in Europe was by rivers and canals. We believe they traveled across France to the French Port of Le Harve. They boarded the steam ship Duchess De Orleans on June 2,1840 and arrived in the New York port on June 26, 1840. They had to go through immigration proceedings before they could enter the US. The first US records of them is in Lucas County Ohio. The county seat being Toledo. He married his 3rd wife here. Also on November 16,1846 in Lucas County open court he applied for and was granted his citizenship. His and Barbara's first child Anna was born there in 1847.
The family then moved to Pulaski County, Indiana in 1848.During that time the Ohio-Indiana canal system( Wabash Erie Canal) 1832-1888 was the main and only travel route from Toledo to Lafayette, Indiana. Distance 226 miles and travel time 3 days. One of the many lock ports between Toledo and Lafayette was the Georgetown (Logansport) lock. Upon Completion of the canal in 1843 a road was built from Logansport to Pulaski County and the Winamac area. We believe this is the route the Bridegrooms took to come to Winamac,Indiana.
The family then consisted of Charles, his 3rd wife Barbara,5 children from his first marriage since Johanna had married and was living in Lucas County Ohio, 2 from his 2nd marriage, 1 from his 3rd and present wife.
The first federal censusfound of Charles is in 1850 in Pulaski County, Indiana. It lists Charles and his wife Barbara Rose Anna, and 7 children living in Indian Creek Township.
If there is a connection or interest I have info further back to Johann Adam Brautigam born in 1735 or 35 to Sebastian Brautigam.
