Just west of Greeneville, Tennessee, near Mosheim (originally called Blue Spring), early German settlers appear to have formed Blue Spring Lutheran Church in about 1806, which remained active until it was disbanded in 1971. We believe that early members of this church may have previously been part of Frieden’s Church in Rockingham County Virginia and/or Drorbach’s Church in Augusta Co VA. According to the very kind and helpful Archivist at the Crumley Lutheran Archives, in Columbia, South Carolina, “There were 5 elderly members left, they had not held services in the church for some time, and they created a cemetery committee to care for where they would be buried. The church pulpit and other items were given to other Lutheran churches. However, there is no mention of the church records.” If the records had been turned over to the Lutheran Church upon disbanding, they would most likely be contained in these Lutheran Archives in South Carolina. Can anyone give us a hint as to the ultimate fate of all those 155 years of church records? Were they perhaps placed in the care of another regional local Lutheran Church; or into private hands? Do they still exist somewhere? We believe that these records are an important Greene County Tennessee historical document that would provide information not available elsewhere. If they are written in German, we would be happy to take the responsibility for transcription and translation of the first 100 years of records, prior to Tennessee State Vital records. Please help.
