I recently purchased the subject studio portrait of teenage girl/young woman taken by J. Jennings, Scandia, KS.
It is identified on the back of the mount in modern pencil printing:
April 14, 1905
The person who sold me this photo or someone must have transferred the name and date from an album page holder or frame. Hopefully, they did so correctly. However, they failed to get the state right--the studio's imprint on the front of the mount clearly reads "KANS." According to "Biographies of Western Photographers: A Reference Guide to Photographers Working in the 19th Century American West," by Carl Mautz (Carl Mutz Publishing, 1997), Joseph Jennings was active in Scandia, Kansas in 1898.
I can't find this individual listed in the census data. I tried searching under the given name Mildred and the surname Braton.
