Amanda Bratt married Andrew Weatherwax
I am hot on the trail of an Amanda Bratt who married into my Weatherwax line. She was the second wife of Andrew Alexander Weatherwax (1817-1867, son of Alexander Andrew "Alex" Weatherwax amd his first wife, Ruth STEARNS.) Andrew and Amanda were married circa 1859, probably in Michigan. The family is enumerated the 1860 US Census for Newberg Twp., Cass Co., MI. Andrew died of consumption on 10 October, 1867 at Newberg Twp. and lies buried with a number of his Weatherwax relatives in Morrison Cemetery, Fabius Twp., St. Joseph Co., MI...which is located just to the east across the county line from Newberg Twp. Amanda, her four children by Andrew and two hired men are listed in 1870 US Census for Newberg Twp., Cass Co., MI. We believe that she is the Amanda Bratt enumerated in the 1850 US Census for Center Twp., St. Joseph Co., IN as follows:
Dwelling #870, Family #870
Charity Bratt, age 54, female, born NY
John Bratt, age 26, male, laborer, born New York
Amanda Bratt, age 18, female, born Ohio
Henry Bratt, age 13, male, born Indiana
Francis Bratt, age 11, male, born Indiana
No husband is listed for Charity, so he probably died prior to this census. Does anyone have a clue as to which Bratt family this might be and what their connection is to the larger BRADT-BRATT-BROTT family? (On one family record, Amanda's surname is spelled BROTT.)
Amanda Bratt Weatherwax must have been a very sharp cookie for her time and place as she is the person of record who platted the Village of Corey. The amount of effort this took must have been considerable because not only does Corey straddle the St. Joseph Co., MI - Cass Co., MI line, but at the time Amanda was platting it, the railroad ran through it as well.
To further complicate things, there ARE two St. Joseph Counties...one in Michigan and one in Indiana! While they do not directly abut each other, there was a great deal of "backing and forthing" between the two...which tends to make genealogical research a bit complicated at times. Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated!
