Hi Carl and all,

It's good that you're out beating the bushes, Carl. Not many of our "cousins" are interested these days.

The Brashears you found are descendants of William Brashears (1770-1852) and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Clayton. They got a land grant of 866 acres on Motlow's Creek up there in the northwest corner of Spartanburg Co and moved there before most of their children were born. They joined the Holly Springs Baptist Church and were life-long members. William's death is noted in the minutes of the meeting in summer 1852. William was a son of William Brashears and Sarah _______, who had land on the lower reaches of Tyger River in Spartanburg Co, SC.

William and Mary Elizqabeth's oldest son, Meredith, stayed on the farm. A good number of his descendants still live in the area. I've visited with some of them. A few of the children moved on to greener pastures (gold!) in Georgia. But most of the children went to Missouri, mostly Adair Co. William Gowen Brashears and his wife, Rosanna Woods, were among the leaders. One of their sons went south and founded the town of Brashears in southeast MO.

William's brother, another of William and Sarah's sons, Ithra Brashears, migrated, first, to Christian Co, KY, then, after the War of 1812, to Crawford Co, IL. I have over a hundred pages of data on them, plus a good number of pictures.

This family, including the first William's parents, William Brashears and Sarah _______, and his brothers not treated in Vol 6 will be the subject of Vol 7. They are believed to be (documents lacking) descendants of Basil Brashears and Anne Belt, of PGCO, MD; Orange/Guilford Co, NC; and Spartanburg Co, SC.

Basil's other children included
1. Robert Brashears who lived in Mecklenberg Co, NC (where his dauther, Martha (Brashears) Morrow lived); Robert died 1810 in Knox Co TN and his descendants moved on to Scott and Campbell Co, TN, where most of the family spell the surname Boshears;

2. Jeremiah Brashears, and his wife Elizabeth _______, whose descendants moved to Hopkins/Christian Co, KY, and spelled their surname, mostly, Beshears.

If anyone has anything on the descendants of these families, I'd sure like to hear from them.

Cheers, and good hunting,
Charles Brashear
