As you can see, I am a "Branstetter". My family is from Pa., though I currently live in the South. We are in possession of a family Bible that places the Branstetter family in the area of York and/or Dauphin counties in the early 1800's. The family oral tradition holds that the family emigrated before the Revolution, tended to be gunsmiths, and in the early 1800's musicians ... many of us have been school teachers. We are Lutheran in our religious background and preference. The family has relatives from the Philly area, Altoona, Harrisburg and many hamlets west of Harrisburg.
Several years ago, we discovered the name Branstetter prominetly displayed on the walls of a Salzburg church, which was an interesting find.
I have several written accounts of a great-great grandfather "Branstetter" who was a member of the 45th Pa.Volunteer Regiment, Ninth Corps during the Civil War. He served the entire war, eventually with Grant's army as it invaded Va. He died in a field hospital in August 1864 as a result of wounds he suffered in battle in June 1864. I have photos (military) and a death certificate for this man. I currently live very close to this man's final resting place in a Federal Cemetary and often visit, wondering about the other members of his family and information I might acquire on them.
I am a high school history teacher and therefore more than interested in geneology, but I do very little research myself. I hope this is useful or interesting.
E-mail me if you have specific questions.
