Becky,

I just did my very first physical foray into Rowan Co, NC Brandon research this summer. I still haven’t had time to go through it, as I covered several lines during the trip. So the following comes from what I found when I built my collection for the eastern Pennsylvania Brandons (five assumed brothers, Thomas, William, John, James and George). The only physical research I performed myself was on the Pennsylvania and Delaware data. Dr. E. Henry Cathey got me sorted on the Cathey side of things and Elaine Oakes shared a wealth of data on her Lock/es and both were on top of the North Carolina years.

The John Brandon you refer to is John Brandon Jr., Capt., b.1713, probably County Fermanagh, Ulster, Ireland – you seem to mix him up with his father. Earlier researchers give John Jr. up to three wives but there is no evidence he had more than one, Elizabeth Patten. Her husband is named in the 1742 Pennsylvania will of her father, William Patten of West Marlborough Twp, Chester Co. Research done with Suzy Parker in Raleigh this summer indicates at least one Elizabeth’s brothers settled in Burke Co, NC. (For future research I want to figure out how they’re related to the Ashville Pattons with Brandon middle names.) I got a copy of Elizabeth Patten Brandon’s Rowan County 04 Sep 1797 will in Raleigh this summer and have an estimated birth date of 1715 for her. I have PA? but really doubt the family was there that early. There’s probably a Patton researcher out there who knows when they came over. John Brandon Jr. d. 27 Apr 1775, buried at Thyatira.

(John Brandon Sr. married first Mary Cathey in Ireland and secondly the widow Elizabeth Lock, after 1744 in Pennsylvania. A different Mary/Maley Cathey married his nephew John Brandon and settled in Huntington Twp, York/Adams Co, PA. John Sr. d. 15 May 1756 and Elizabeth Lock Brandon d. 10 Aug 1760, both Rowan Co. First wife Mary Cathey Brandon thought to have died c.1733 somewhere in Pennsylvania, around the birth of her last child and about the time they came over from Ulster.)

John Jr. and Elizabeth Patten Brandon’s daughter Ann’s early match with a younger James Rutherford, s/o neighbors Griffith and Elizabeth Graham Rutherford, produced David Rutherford. I have James Rutherford marrying just Mary Gilleson and dying at the Battle of Eutaw Springs in 1781. Looks like Ann didn’t give up and marry somebody else until after Jim died. She married John Todd Jr. in 1782 and had five kids with him and married secondly widower Joseph Thomson. I have a birth date of “abt 1752” for her – she’s on the Thyatira graveyard list as Ann Thompson with a death date of 17 Oct 1821, aged 61 years, stone erected by her son Thomas Todd.

James Rutherford was one of 10 kids, b. “abt. 1758” Rowan Co, NC, died 08 Sep 1781, Eutaw Springs, SC. No data on Mary Gilleson. (See Minnie R.H. Long, “General Griffith Rutherford and allied families” for further back.)

I understand that David Rutherford is referred to as his half brother in the will of Thomas Todd, son of Ann Brandon and John Todd. I had a correspondence with Bill Trott on this matter and he sent me Ann’s husband John Todd’s will which calls David Rutherford his stepson. According to a 1997 posting by Ima Brooks McClure, the Court Minutes of Rowan County call David the “base born” son of James Rutherford and Ann Brandon – worth tracking down. That may be where his estimated birth date comes from so you’ve probably got the date to look at. My notes have his birth date as “Bef. 07 May 1777,” so that’s probably it, it’s actually the Court Minutes session. One of the reasons we have to get copies of all our sources! Goes on my list.

Phew.
Sally
