I’m ready for a fresh look, Phyllis, and this time I think I have Shadrach. I’ve started to build my Halifax Brandon tree since they matched Lineage I by DNA. I believe the problem and the solution lie here, with a bad transcript/annotation of a will:
“"David Brandon (s/o Francis) Halifax Co, VA, dated 1795 Book 3 p362,
wife--Rebecca (nee Connally), brothers--William and Thomas, sister--Mrs Thadwick Hudson, nephews--Samuel and Smith Brandon sons of William, David Grives Brandon s/o Thomas. Wit, --Theo Carter, Thomas Brandon, Thomas Word."
For that will of the David Brandon identified as the son of Francis to work out, he has to be INSTEAD the son of David, born after his father wrote his 1769 will and before dad died in 1778 without a rewrite.
It gives us "Samuel Smith Brandon" in the right place as one individual son of brother William Byrd Brandon I m. Rebecca Scott, David Grimes Brandon subbed for "Grives" as a son of his brother Thomas m. Agnes/Agatha Warren (David Grimes Brandon is also identified in his grandmother's will) and a sister Mary available for Shadrach Hudson, noted in the Caswell Co, NC marriage bonds as registering with Mary Brandon Sept. 25, 1784.
We must erase, also, “nee Connally.” Rebecca Connally married her David in 1800. I now place her back with the other David, the son of Francis. No more data on them.
So the David of the will must have been born after his dad David wrote his 1769 will and have died himself quite young, married but without children.
By elimination, I also give dad David a daughter Rebecca born after his will was written, whose marriage bond with David Preston is dated 20 Aug 1787. There are no other Rebecca Brandons available in the Halifax tree that I can find. It reassures me that researcher Larry Brandon also puts her here. Backing that up is that Richard Hostler, brother-in-law in this position by sister Margaret, went bond for the Brandon-Preston marriage.
Does anyone have any copies of the original Halifax wills on that web page? They are on my to-do list. I’ve gotten the Pennsylvania ones (bad transcript warning on at least one of them, too).
I hatehatehate reorganizing established trees like this but the evidence seems to demand it. I have kept all your postings on the subject, Phyllis, and your data on Brandon-Hudson-Preston-Warren intertwinings on marriages, deeds and wills really helped.
P.S. Caty Brandon d/o Francis married James Stewart Warren 15 Dec 1794 in Halifax. Another Warren. I’ll leave you to the Caty/Betsey puzzle for now!
