I am responding to your post for my mother. My mother is Mildred Luce whom you posted a message in response to on May 10, 2002.She and I have compiled the following reply for you.
Paul, how are you related to Clara Shoemaker? We have not found any of Clara’s brothers, sisters, or parents. What have you found? Thanks for sharing.
Following is some of what we know about Jacob Brandel and Clara Shoemaker Brandel.
Jacob Brandel was born 26 Dec 1843 in Baden, Germany. His tombstone in Grand Prairie Cemetery in Brown Co., NE stated the birthdate of 12-26-1843.His daughter, Lizzie May Brandel Roberts wrote in her own handwriting that her father was born 12-26-1843 in Baden, Germany.
Clara Shoemaker (Shumaker, Schumaker) was born 8 Dec 1847 in Baden, Germany. Her daughter, Lizzie May Brandel Roberts wrote in her own handwriting that her mother was born 12-8-1847 in Baden, Germany.Do you know Clara Shoemaker’s father’s name? You only mention you don’t know her mother’s name.Do you know Clara Shoemaker’s brother’s and sister’s names?Do you know when Clara Shoemaker came to the U.S. and to which port?
Jacob Brandel and Clara Shoemaker were married 8 Jan 1867 in Sandusky, Erie Co., Ohio. This is verified by a marriage record in Volume 4, Page 143.This record was viewed on LDS library film # 954129.
Their first and only son of Jacob Brandel and Clara Shoemaker Brandel was born 9 Aug 1869 in Sandusky, Erie Co., OH and named Henry Charles.
In the 1870 Dubuque City Directory, (Dubuque Co., Iowa) Jacob Brandel was found. He had evidently moved himself, wife and son to Dubuque. There have been other Brandel’s in the Dubuque area.
By 1872 the Jacob Brandel family had moved to Independence, Iowa where their 2nd child and one and only daughter Lizzie May was born on 4 Feb 1872 in Independence, Buchanan Co., Iowa.Lizzie May is my great-grandmother and I remember visiting her many times when she was around 100 years old.I lacked 1 month of being 13 when she died on January 26, 1974, Osceola, Clarke Co., Iowa.
In 1884 the Jacob Brandel family moved to Brown Co., NE by the reference from a newspaper article for Henry Brandel’s 100th birthday. My Mom, Mildred Luce believes the Jacob Brandel family moved to Brown Co., NE in 1886 by references her grandmother, Lizzie Brandel Roberts, had among her papers.
On 19 Sep 1891 at his home 15 Miles nw Of Ainsworth, NE, Jacob Brandel died.He is buried in the Grand Prairie Cemetery in Brown Co., NE northwest of Ainsworth, NE.The tombstone states he died in 1892 but that is incorrect. An Ainsworth newspaper article printed in 1891 states he died in 1891.
On 17 Feb 1892 in Ainsworth, Brown Co., NE their daughter Lizzie May married Alfred Andrew Jackson Roberts. This date is proven by their marriage certificate.
On 14 Mar 1894 at the bride’s home in Johnstown, NE Henry Charles Brandel married Katherine May Haas.
Clara (Shoemaker) Brandel died in the hospital on 30 Jul 1905 in Dayton, Montgomery Co., OH.There are 2 articles from the Dayton newspaper that states Clara died by a peculair death by poisoning. However, death by poisoning was ruled out.Clara (Shoemaker) Brandel was supposedly visiting her mother in Dayton, OH when she died. There were no Shoemakers in the 1905 city directory that fits the addresses given in the newspaper articles stating Clara’s death.
My Mom has picture albums but most of the people are not named. However, there are names on some pictures that are supposed to be Clara (Shoemaker) Brandel’s relatives. Some of the names are “Joe and Martin Schied” who state they are Lizzie Brandel Robert’s cousins.“Adeline Shoemaker” is supposed to be the sister of Clara (Shoemaker) Brandel and then the name appears later as “Adeline Harp”.There is a picture of “Aunt Kate Schied”.There is an “Aunt Lizzie” and “Aunt Julia Ware”.The last two names could have been either Shoemaker or Brandel. We are not sure which.
We would really like to hear from you and what you have.
