I would like to determine the parentage of my grandfather CHARLES J. BRAND who was born on 4/21/1859, "in or near Chicago, Illinois",according to newspaper accounts of his death. I would also like to know if he had any siblings. A "Charles J. Brand" is listed in the 1991 Chicago City Directory as a "blksmith, bds 1154 Division Street"; a "Charles Brand" is listed in the same directory as a "blksmith, h. 1154 Division Street"; and a "George Brand" is listed as a "teamster, bds. 1154 Division Street". It is not known if this is my Charles J. Brand. No Charles J. Brand was listed in any other Chicago City Directory from 1859 through 1892. For unknown reasons and apparently alone, Charles J. Brand turned up in Houston, Texas and appears first in the 1892-93 Houston City Directory as a "bartender at the Lone Star Hotel, bds. same". The 1894-95 Houston Directory lists him as co-owner with C. August Depenbrock of the Brand and Depenbrock grocery at 1702 Houston Avenue, corner of Summer Street, in Houston. The 1896-97 Houston directory lists him at the same grocery. Subsequent Houston directories list him as a real estate agent (1902-03), real estate dealer (1904-05) and manager of timber and ranch department of C.W. Hahl & Co(1905-06). Charles married Mrs. Mary Simon Bolling, the widow of Henry F. Bolling, in Houston on 2/22/1893. They had the following children: Emma Brand (b 1893), Cecelia Trenetta Brand (b 1894), Sophie Gertrude Brand (b 1896), Elfrieds Brand (b 1898), Newton George Brand (b 1900), and Stanley Gregory Brand (b 1902). While his wife Mary was a first generation U.S. daughter of Gregory Simon, an 1843 arrival from Alsace-Lorraine and Trenatra Peters, an 1845 arrival from Hanover, Germany, it is not known if his parents were also European. If you have any knowledge of my grandfather or have any suggestions that might aid in my search, please address me at: Newton G. Brand, Jr.
