Branaman in shoot-out on train.

Samuel Hastings Branaman who was called "Haste", was said to have been a Deputy Sheriff or a U.S. Marshall. There has been a family story that Haste was riding on a passenger train traveling across the Missouri River between Atchison, Kansas and Buchanan Co., Missouri when he spotted a man on the train who acted suspicious and nervous. Eventually the man jumped up and drew a gun. Haste drew his gun, shot and killed the man on the spot. As it turned out,, the man was a wanted criminal. This was supposed to have happened about 1895.
There is also reference to this in a letter from Haste's neice to her nephew.
I have heard that it was in the newspaper, but I don't know which one.
Does anyone know anything about this?
Thanks in advance for any information anyone could give me about this.
