The oldest traceable ancestor in our recent family tree is Luther Braley who traveled from Lake Odessa, Michigan. He moved to Kansas and married a lady of German ancestry in Pawnee County. Her name was Emma Franz; the daughter of John A. Franz and Emilie Zitzman. John A. Franz was born Aug 6, 1849 in Erfurt, Saxony, Germany and immigrated to the United States with his wife in 1880. His daughter, Emma, had ten children, of which the oldest was Clarence Levi. One girl, Emma was bitten by a rattlesnake and died at the age of 3. Johnny was killed in a traffic accident at the age of 28 and Eddie was 72 when he passed away leaving 3 girls and 4 boys. The descendents of Eddie Braley live in the Denver region. In September of 1891, Luther Braley purchased a quarter horse and participated in the Cherokee Strip run to settle Oklahoma from lands purchased from Native Americans. He lined-up with the men along the starting line, and when the cannon fired he raced his horse to acquire land. After planting an American Flag to mark his territory, he registered his 160 acres either in Hennessey or Kingfisher, Oklahoma Territory. Not long after this he sold the land for another horse, a set of harness and a springwagon and came back to Pawnee County, Kansas. Clarence Levi Braley related the story of the ten children being raised in a “dug-out”. The side of a hill was chiseled away to form a room and timbers were placed in the front to make a wall with door. Luther and Emma’s children: Clarence, Eddie, Hugh, Amelia, John, George, Maybelle, Richard, Alpha.
