Two branches of Brainards in the west

I am a native of Sacramento, California, son of Harry D. Brainard, son of Harry A. Brainard, son of Agustus Brainard, generalstore owner, Sacramento, 1850's. My paternal grandmother divorced Harry A. Brainard to marry Ernest Brainard (not relatd to Harry, obviously). Two branches of the family represented here (only two in Sacramento at the end of the 19th century). Ernest was co-builder of a Wright-like airplane in 1910 which flew quite nicely. I am most curious to know where Agustus Brainard came from.
