I found a great letter that my Grandmothers cousin Ralph and wife Wilma and written her about their trip to the plantation in VA. that Samuel had bought in 1747 with the Blue Ridge Mts. to the East.
Samuel had cameto America July 24, 1740. A family by the name Johnston paid his passage and he worked for them seven years. In 1747 he bought 200 acers about ten miles west of the Johnston's. He was married to ann spotwood and they had two children while working for the Johnston's.
Ralph also found out that William Beverly got a grant of several thousand acers from the Queen around 1736. He sold parcels of it to the presbyterians who were pouring in from Northern Ireland. The Scotch had migrated to Ireland earlier so the BRAFFORDS are SCOTCH-IRISH.
Ralph thinks Hugh, John, and Samuel Jr. fought in the Revelutionary War. The oldest son Hugh married a young widow of that war. HEr husband had been killed but he had been given 3000 acers from the Govt. something to do with Military sevice. The land was appox 45 miles South of home place near Rock Bridge North of the James River. Hugh, with help from Samuel Jr. built a two story house on this plantationof brick which they made. The walls are about 16'' thick. Buck Brafford live there now. Buck showed Ralph and Wilma all around the land. Including where the slaves lived and the cemetary where slaves are burried on one side and the whites on the other. Hugh stayed but Samuel Jr. headed West.. Probably through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky. Corbin, KY is just West of the gap and there are quite a number of Braffords there. Including the family cemetary.
Ralph and Wilma drove out to the Tinkling Springs Church where records showed Samuels children had been baptized. This was close to Johnston's place. Ralph purchased a book fromTinkling Springs Fisherville, VA called "Headwaters of Freedom" by Wilson.
Ralph and Wilma also went to the Bethel Church North of Samuels place a short distance where records show other children were baptized. Son John had married Jane Berry. they found their graves and think the parents are buried there but the stones are very old. The farm is called The Berry Farm today. Ralph also purchased a book there "Bethel and her ministers 1746-1974 by Herbert Turner. The Bethel presbyterian Church is on Rout One Stannton, VA.
This letter was very interesting to me but saddly Ralph had died it is unknow if Wilma has, they lived in Arizona when he wrote my Grandmother this letter.
Ralph and Wilma Brafford
157 N. Joshua Tree Lane
Gilbert, Arizona 85234
He said he had video and pictures he would love to share from the trip.
We are planning a trip down to VA and KY this summer to visit the plantation and the other farms, we can't wait. My sister and I are thinking about being baptized in the church were Samuels kids were. How fun. I hope you enjoy reading my story of our family line and will post anything new and interesting I come across. I have much more pic and info about the people I listed so if you have a question please contact me.
