You may be right about the little humor, referring to Bradford as Colonel.Who knows.As for how well the letter is written I have no idea.Thomas died before he could file an application to Bureau of Indian Affairs.That is a good way to tell if they could write, as they had to sign their name to the application.However, Thomas' children, William and Voil filed theirs and did sign their names indicating that they knew how to write.
I do know that the children of Ben Brackett, (Michael, Jesse, Thomas, Mary, Adam, Sarah, Ben, Martha and James) supposedly did go to school in Georgia.Even that was no way to tell if they could write.All the documentation on Jesse M. has him X'ing the signature blocks of all his correspondence.
