Where is MY Missouri Brackett
AAAGGGGGHHHHHH!!! Mass confusion!! I have sat in front of this screen over 4 hrs reading about my new found family link. It only strengthens my idea that my immediate lines were all found under a rock. I seem to be able to find info on brothers, sisters, wives, and husbands except my line...
I have been searching for years, and family history says my gggrandmother Missouri (Jones) was married to William Henry Smith. The only child I am aware of is Rosa Lee Smith.
Now however, after finding my Missouri and William listed in the Dawes, and sending for Missouri's application (it was listed on the rolls as 'estate of') and receiving it this week, I am at a loss. The application was filled out by William Smith, husband of Missouri Smith who died 14 August 1906. Residence listed as Polk Co, TN. William lists wife as Missouri BRACKETT, age 31 and belonging to the Cherokee tribe. He lists children who were living on May 28, 1906 as: Willie May Bertha Smith, 7, born June 5, 1900
James Harris Smith, 5, born June 12, 1902
Calvin Harris Smith, 3, born May 30, 1904
He goes on to list wife's father as James K Polk Brackett. Wife's mother as Malissa Pierce Brackett and has both listed as born in Franklin Co, GA. He says James K resided in Gillmore Co, Ga in 1851 and Malissa Piercein Murray Co, Ga in 1851.
He lists Missouri's brothers and sisters as:
John W Brackett, b Aug 3, 1867
Thomas Brackett, b June 26, 1871
Rose Lee Brackett, b Dec 27, 1872
Ida Brackett, b Dec 5, 1878
Jimey Brackett died July 29, 1870
He then lists Missouri's parents as Mige Brackett and Cyntha Hubbard Brackett, saying they were residents in Gillmore Co, GA in 1851
He shows Children of Mige and Cyntha as:
Martha Matilda Brackett
Daniel Brackett
Bayless Brackett
John Brackett
Bradford Brackett
Francis Brackett (married name Kelley)
Under the 'Remarks' he said-Missouri Brackett was my wife and she died August 14th 1906 and she was a decendent of the Cherokee indians.
This application was signed by WM. Smith, 26 August 1907 and John French (Trench?), Deputy Circuit Court clerk witnessed.
William had 2 witnesses sign the affidavit, J A Johnsten (known WM. Smith 15 yrs) and H L Burns (12 Yrs).
Unfortunately, the lady who photocopied these pages did not proof read as the first page showing the No. and Action Taken for Named, plus reason for action, did not print. I can tell there is faint writing but cannot make it out.
If anyone has anything to help me get this mess straightened out, I would be ever so grateful. I have reached deadends on my fathers side at my great grandfather and gg grandfather for way too many years.
I can be reached at either [email protected] or [email protected]
Thank you
