Dear Anne:

I have been collecting Bracy material for several years. I am descended from John Bracey who died in Halifax Co., VA and whose family settled in Granville County. I have been trying to untangle these many lines for years. What records have you looked at? Have you seen the Ligon book which is the bases for most of the existing research on the Bracy family.

I do not believe anyone has been able to establish William's lineage due to the lack of records in Virginia. It is assumed they are English, probably of Norman origin. There is a well documented Quaker merchant, William Bressie of Isle of Wright County, VA and he appears to have connections to Bristol. It is thought there may be some connection; however, I have seen no proof and there is certainly no evidence that the Bracey's of the Southside were Quaker, instead they seem to have been part of the Church of England. It has been said that Elizabeth's maiden name is Wilkeson; however, I have not seen any clear evidence of these. Some of the Wilkerson family lived in the same area of Virginia.

There are numerous Bracy records in Lunenburg and Mecklenburg Counties which are quite interesting.
