Dear Martin (and others with Clare connections):

First, I want to thank you for the information you've already provided to me on the Quilty Boyles and Kilmurry Ibrickane Parish.

I recently returned from a trip to the area and have many more pieces of the puzzle and contacts relating to this family specifically.

It's not yet clear whether I'm directly related to the family... My grandfather's name was also Austin. He was born to Michael Boyle in Iowa, however. Michael Boyle came from County Clare, but I still can't confirm that it was from the Quilty area.

You mention the children of Pat Boyle and Mary Corry, who were married Sept. 14, 1865:

John, bap. 2-12-1868
Pat, bap. 3-17-1872
Austin, bap. 3-25-1875 (your gfather)
Mary, bap. 9-6-1879
Tom, bap. 2-16-1884

The father of these five, Pat Boyle, was the son of Bartholomew Boyle and Honora Scalane. Here are all their children:

Mary, bap. 5-30-1839
Patrick, bap. 1-29-1842 (your ggfather)
Bartholomew, bap. 11-10-1844
Ellen, bap. 4-16-1848
Agustine, bap. 6-24-1850
Bridget, bap. 11-29-1857

The abovementioned Bartholomew married Margaret Ryan in 1869 and had six children by her: Mary (1869), Norry (1871), Ellen (1872), Margaret (1875), Bridget (1878), John (1880). Margaret Ryan apparently died, and Bartholomew then married Margaret Shanahan (according to the info I received in Quilty), and there were six more children: Catherine (1884), Pat (1885), Eliza (1887), Lucy (1889), Peter (1891) and Bartholomew (1894).

The abovementioned Eliza emigrated to the U.S. and married James Egan in Chicago on Nov. 22, 1909.

By my calculation, you have an aunt living in New Jersey and an uncle living in England.

Based on geography and family names, the most optimistic scenario is that we have a common ancestor among the eldest Bartholomew's forebears.

The only things I know for certain about my ggfather's Irish origins is that he was born in 1820 in County Clare, and that the best man at his 1847 wedding in Wisconsin was named John Boyle. I assume John was a relative who also immigrated to the Midwestern United States. Michael named his first sons Michael, John and Austin ... which could hint at traditional family names.

There are also 1856 Iowa state census listings for a widowed Mary Corry (or Casey ... the spelling isn't clear) who apparently was the mother of a Michael and John Boyle (but these kids were younger than my ggfather was). Corry or Casey (or even Cooney?) was apparently a maiden name. Also part of this group was an M. Boyle, a 31-year-old widow with a 3-year-old son named John and a 1-year-old daughter named Mary. All these people came to Dubuque, Iowa, in 1856, but apparently moved on.

I'm listing all this information to help Martin... but also in hopes that something will ring a bell with someone else. I'm running out of avenues for tracking down my Michael Boyle's origins (have found church record for marriage and civil record for death, but no civil record for marriage and no reference to place of birth that's more specific than County Clare).

My e-mail address is family@boyle.net ...
