Dear Charlotte,

I am William J Timney, Great Great Grandson of William and Ellen Timney.

After many years of dead ends and little information, I stumbled onto your posting. You have unlocked some mystery regarding my family. Thank You!!

Now I can share some information I received from my Grandmother almost 20 years ago. There may also be some additional family lore to research. I will be brief and include my e-mail so we can contact each other at greater length.

The story goes that My Great Grandfather William worked on the railway and eventually settled in Jersey City where he and his wife Mary Doris eventually passed away. They were both devout Irish Catholics. In the census of 1910 they were listed as residents of Warren St. Jersey City with 3 children. Leonella (b 1887); William ('Grandpa') and Clare. I know little of Clare. Leonella became a nun and my Grandfather entered the seminary to become a priest but returned from Europe to eventually become a lawyer and a Judge in Jersey City. He married Sarah Brogan of Freeland and they lived in Jersey City until the early 70's.

My Grandmother Sarah was vague on details but one story now seems true based on your info. She always suggested that my grandfather had a cousin that was an executive at a NY firm (NY Life, I believe), named Allen (last name) that "wouldn't own" my grandfather. Seems as though the whole Catholic Protestant issue was alive and well in the Timney clan.
I do have a picture of William and Mary that I must scan into the computer. Sarah also suggested that someone named Ellen was born in Ireland but I never understood where in the family tree she was, now I know, (Aunt to my Grandfather)

My Grandfather, William James Timney (b 1899) was married to Sarah Brogan (b 1898) both of Freeland. They both attended St. Ann's before they were married and after they retired (to Freeland). Both were buried out of that parish.

My father is William Joseph Timney (b 1938) and an only child. I am also William Joseph Timney (b 1962) and oldest of 6.
Seems as though us William's aren't very creative with names.

On another side of the clan, Sarah Brogan was born in Freeland. Her father was William Brogan and mother was Elizabeth Gallagher. Both of Donegal Ireland decent (b around 1865) but I am not sure if they were actually born there. I think William Brogans father was James Brogan. I know one of his sons was. William was a butcher in Freeland. Sarah had 10 siblings and one was named Mary. Mary (b c.1907) and was married to John Boyle of Hazleton. I believe both John and Mary died in the mid 70's. Could it be that we have two family connections?

I believe I have pictures of them also. Incidentally, we still own a house in Freeland was which built by William Brogan on Schwabe St. We are in the process of renovating it for rental.

My e-mail is wjtimney@comcast.net I live in Northern NJ now with three children and my wife Ann.

I really hope to hear from you soon.

Regards,
William J. Timney (the fifth?) How crazy.
