I'm trying to track down my own ancestors, who come very close to your description. I wonder if there was a relationship: Michael Boyle and [Mary] Ellen Howe were born in County Clare, Ireland. Michael born ca. 1820, Ellen born 1833 or 1836. Both supposedly emigrated to New York in the 1840s, perhaps 1847-48. Michael may have worked on the Barge Canal in New York, then worked his way toward the Midwest on the railroad. Ellen may have been accompanied by other family members who worked with Michael. Ellen settled in Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa, in 1852. Michael purchased 160 acres in Garryowen, Jackson County, Iowa, in 1853 (this is the homestead where I grew up). The two were married in 1857 at Sinsinawa Mound, Grant County, Wis. One of the witnesses to the marriage was John Boyle (the other was Margaret Quinn). Their first child, Michael, was born in 1857. In 1858 they became settled in the Garryowen home. Second child was Mary, born in 1860. Eight more children followed. Michael died in 1888, Ellen died in 1890. Howe relatives may have survived until at least 1909. So I'm intrigued by the info about your Michael and Mary Boyle. The Jones County line is just a couple of miles away from the old homestead. Like I say, your Michael is probably not the same as my Michael ... but would be interested in any info you might be willing to share.
