[Steamboat] Capt. John Boyle [1825-1901]
Posted by: Randal W. Cooper Date: July 16, 1998 at 13:05:02
  of 2800

Captain John Boyle was b.1825, a son of Samuel Boyle and Barzilla Murphy, in Garrard Co KY. Samuel Boyle moved to Clinton Co IN, c.1833. About 1843, Samuel returned to KY, to Lewis Co. His son John apparently was not with his parents during this period. In 1850, John was listed with his parents, in Lewis Co KY.

In 1860, John Boyle was in partnership with Henry McKee as a "Tradesman", in Quincy, Lewis Co KY. John married Catherine Hackworth c.1865. They had a son Samuel. Boyle was still in Quincy in 1870, but was listed as a farmer. By 1880, John Boyle had removed to Ironton, Lawrence Co OH, where he was a saloon keeper.

Captain John Boyle died in Ironton in June, 1901, and is buried in Woodland Cemetery, Ironton. His obituary stated that he had been a steamboat captain in antebellum days, though it did not reveal what river or on what ship[s].

I would like to find out more about Captain Boyle, because after the Civil War, he did a kindness to my third-great grandfather William Cooper, by taking him into his home and caring for him. Cooper was wounded in the head in the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou, Mississippi, Dec 1862.

How can I find the vessels and locations that Boyle trafficked?
