Back a few years ago there was much research on our Robert Boyd line and it appears to fallen by the wayside. It is my hope to rekindle that spark again and with us all working together put the pieces of the puzzle together. I am descended from Robert Boyd and his wife Rosanna Stewart, through their son David Barton Boyd and his wife Elizabeth Turrentine. Elizabeth Turrentine was the sister to Captain Daniel Turrentine, who was one of the early founders of Gadsden. David Barton was born in Newberry, South Carolina abt 1810 and later came to Etowah County, Alabama and died there abt 1881, no one as far as I know is sure were Elizabeth died. From what I have heard no one has ever been able to exactly determine where Robert Boyd was buried, but have thought it could be on his property in Meriwether Co, GA. Our Boyd cousin Donna Standerfer has put much work in these Boyd lines and raised had some great question to make us all dig further. We want to thank her and her husband John again for all their hard work. One good question she had was the maiden name of Stewart for Rosanna. We all have all seen this last name, but is there any verification of this, or has it been passed down for generations by old family? Now there is no doubt that her first name was Rosanna, because of a land record she found in Newberry, SC. (not to mention a daughter named Rosanna). Also my neice Kathy Grace has worked with me hard over the past several years to help solve this. I want to thank her for all her help. Another good friend and distant Boyd cousin, Mrs. Gail Brown from the Northeast Alabama Historical Society, who descended from Hugh Boyd the Revolutionary War Veteran has helped us much in this research, and put much into it. I believe the Hugh she desends from is the brother to our Robert. Our Robert Boyd also has a son named Hugh ( probably after his brother). My mother Ruby Jo (Hubbard) Skillman is buried in the cemetary at Aurora. I have been going there since I was a child and there are alot of Boyds buried in Aurora. My father always told me that he had a granddad buried there, but only remembered seeing it as a small child and in later years forgot the exact spot of the old unmarked grave. My question is was it his grandfather Issac Thomas Skillman or great-granddad David Barton Boyd? Isaac Skillman was the son- In Law of David Barton Boyd. Isaac had married Sarah the daughter of David and Elizabeth Boyd in 1868 in old Baine County, Alabama (currently Etowah County, AL) Daivid's daughter Sarah Parston Boyd was married to a Mathis the first time and he was killed in the Civil war in Georgia, they had one son Jon Bell Mathis, whose descendants settled around Marshall County, Alabama. Then in 1868 she remarried to Isaac Thomas Skillman, the son of Elijah B. Skillman and Martha Patsy Noble from Tishomingo, MS and Etowah Co. AL. Isaac was born in 1845 in Tishomingo, MS and after his father Elijah's death in 1851 his mother and the children came back to Dekalb Co. AL, (Etowah Co.) to be near her father the Rev. John Noble. Isaac was injured on their farm in 1879 in Etowah County which made it hard for him to farm, in 1880 Isaac and Sarah and their sons Jon Bell Mathis and Walter T. Skillman was living in the household with Sarah's father David Barton Boyd. Then in 1881 David Barton Boyd, died from heart dropsy. Then the last record we have of Isaac the son in-law of David and who my great-granddad was in 1882 where he and Sarah sold the farm. Ater this we never saw or heard from him again. All my granddad Walter T. Skillman the son of Isaac and Sarah could remember was as a child of about age seven, was his father telling him that he had to leave on a trip for a short while and would soon be back. For some reason he never made it back, he had a sister in Texas, did he go there? Or was he killed or injured and died along the journey? There was may perils and dangers a person could come across in those days either on horseback or walking. Robbery, snakebite, tripping and falling, falling sick along the way, bad weather, just to name a few. We do not know were either David Barton Boyd or Issac Thomas Skillman are buried, I feel it is either at Auora (by what my father told me) or the Cove Methodist Church near Walnut Grove, AL. This is were Sarah, David's daughter is buried. After Isaac died in 1882, his wife Sarah Boyd (Mathis-Skillman) remarried to D.P. Stanfield. D.P. had been her brother In-law and was married to her sister Mary (Boyd) Pope. Her fist husband had also gotten killed and Mary remarried to D.P. Stanfield. The Boyds, Skillman's and Stanfield's were all neighbors around 1880. After Isaac Skillman's death this left Sarah as a widow, and having just lost her father David barton Boyd the year before this was hard on her. Then her neighbor who was her brother in-law was also a recent widower and had just lost his wife Mary Boyd. Due to this closeness and need for each others help, Sarah Skillman and D.P. Stanfield got married. D.P. Stanfield signed on the marriage bond for his step son Walter Skillman. If memory serves me correctly Sarah died in 1886 and is buried at the Cove Methodist Church, also know as Snead Memorial near Walnut Grove, AL. Her tombstone says: Sarah P. Stanfield, the mother of J.B. Mathis. Many of these families still remain in the areas of Etowah, Blount, St. Clair, Marshall counties in Alabama today. Anyone that has additional info and that can help in any way on these families, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much Danny and Reba Skillman. email me at: skilled@hopper.net and suncitytanningoneonta@gmail.com Notify Administrator about this message?
