John,
Glad to know there are more of us with the same theory on Robert's parentage. It sure seems to make sense. And the more I research and the more facts I gather, the more sense it makes.
By the way, according to Dick's notes, Joseph Stewart's estate file may be found in Newberry Co., SC, Estate File Box 18, File 12. Dick wrote a wonderful book on the Stewarts, "Ever Honored Mother and Father," a copy of which I am a proud owner. He included my descendancy from Robert and Rosannah in it, another fact which makes me proud. I am descended from Hugh Boyd, Robert's son, and Nancy Hopper; Hugh's son, Robert Boyd and Sarah LeGuin; Robert and Sarah Boyd's daughter, Louisa Elizabeth Boyd Payne, who was my great-grandmother; Louisa Boyd Payne's daughter, Sarah Jane Payne McWhorter; and my mother a McWhorter-Fowler, who is still living.
Now, to address your remarks.
Regarding Robert H. Boyd, son of Hugh and Jennet/Jane Boyd ... Robert actually married "Cloretta" Gray, the daughter of Maj. Frederick Gray and Cloretta Dawkins. One of Robert's daughters also had a daughter named Cloretta. I have done much research on Robert, who also appears in Meriwether County among our Boyds. His living next door to Rosanna and William Boyd in 1840 makes a lot of sense now that we know he was Rosanna's brother. Cloretta died in 1848 in Meriwether and Robert remarried at least once, maybe twice. I am still going over his records from the Meriwether County courthouse. I also have been in touch with a descendant who shared Robert's Bible records with me. Researching him was important to disprove the theory that he was the grandson who administered old John's estate. We shattered that one nicely.
I, too, have wondered about David's being (or not being) a son of old John, but have not dug into that one. It was very strange that he would not be mentioned in the estate papers at all.
Regarding Hugh K. Boyd being Robert's father, I can't swallow this at all, but I wish someone would tell me where they came up with that. Several files on Rootsweb even have Hugh K. and Robert born the same year, and that certainly cannot be. Maybe it's a case of one little goat following another little goat as they jump off the cliff. Just put something in there ... anything will do ... whether it makes sense or not. And everybody copies it and off the cliff they go.
I have not seen the land records where Robert and Rosannah sold their land in 1822. If you have the particulars of this (either an abstract or the exact wording will do), I would really appreciate your sharing it.
You mentioned Alexander as being a possible name for Robert and I'm not sure where you came up with that. There was a Robert Alexander Boyd who was in Randolph County, Alabama in the 1850s but he is from a different branch of Boyds, as far as I have researched. This Robert Alexander Boyd is the son of an Alexander Boyd and Sarah Hinton; Alexander is the son of John and Eleanor Boyd of Abbeville Dist., SC. This John Boyd was in Meriwether county at the same time as our Boyds, as was his son Alexander and his son John B. Boyd. But they lived in a different area and did not do any land transactions with our Boyds. John seems to have goneback to Abbeville where he died in 1836. His estate was administered both in Abbeville and in Meriwether. I have a copy of the Meriwether estate papers and an abstract of the Abbeville papers. The names of the legatees are the same in both cases. John's wife, Eleanor, remained in Abbeville through 1860 and lived with her children who stayed there. What is so interesting is that descendants of this John Boyd who stayed in Georgia (Alexander and John B. Boyd) made their way to Carroll County and married descendants of our Boyd family!!
I, also, have wondered where the name "Barton" came from as regards David Barton Boyd. It could very well be a clue to Robert's past.
I am sending you (in a private e-mail) an article I did on the Meriwether Boyds -- all of them. This article appears in the recently released "Heritage of Meriwether County, Georgia" book which was published by the Meriwether County Historical Society. Since I wrote the article, I have discovered the answers to some of my questions which are answered in this message -- those about Robert H. Boyd and Cloretta Gray, John and Eleanor Boyd, and the relationship of our Robert to John "Waggoner Jack" Boyd. We now believe they were uncle and nephew which makes all the coincidences make sense. It also answers Mr. George Hugh Boyd's question he posed in his Boyd/Tidwell book about Waggoner Jack being accompanied by a cousin, Hugh, when he came to Georgia. This Hugh, we now believe, would be my Hugh Boyd, son of Robert.
Any information you have on the Turrentines would be greatly appreciated. I'm very close to Pike County also and need to do more research there.
(I hope this discussion is helping someone.)
Judy
