Hi Elizabeth, Having a Harriet Bowyer in my ancestry born in Leek in 1875 I did pick up various info’ and in many other families, esp. Eardley /Yardley /Clowes going back to 1300’s. Your Harriet was born to James B. and Elizabeth Mellor – there being many Mellors in the high Moorlands. In 1861 James was already a collier at 12 years old, as was his father James, living near the Hazelbarrow mine, which had a large steam powered pump engine. In the past I was surprised to find out about extensive coalmining behind the Roaches, recorded back to the 1400’s. Cannot find a Staffordshire marriage for James senior, but his wife Harriet had been born in Derbyshire, but marriage could even be in Cheshire. James senior was baptised at nearby Meerbrook church on 8th June 1817, of William and Joan Boyer. Before the building of Flash church in 1780’s (Quarnford) ceremonies had to be at Alstonefield. Many of these miners and future Leek Bowyers were from a Daniel Bowyer in the 1790’s. Old records before this had spellings of Boar (dialect). See my other forum entries re. Daniel Bowyer. I also note possible confused links with the knightly Bowyers of Knypersley (Biddulph), one of whom became sheriff ? of Leek in civil war 1650’s. Bye pete Notify Administrator about this message?
