Title: Old and new Westmoreland / by John N. Boucher. Vol. 4.
Author: Boucher, John Newton, 1854-1933.

pg. 823
“ROBERT DAUGHERTY BOWSER - This is the name of one who, though never a resident of Westmoreland county, was regarded by the people of Greensburg and the vicinity almost as one of themselves. One reason for this is found in the fact of MR. BOWSER’S alliance by marriage with one of the old families of the county and another in that high reputation as a man and a citizen which caused the announcement of his death to be received here with nigh as much regret as in his own community.

WILLIAM BOWSER, father of ROBERT DAUGHERTY BOWSER, was born in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, where he passed his entire life as a farmer. He married MARY BOWSER (no relation), and among the nine children born to them was ROBERT DAUGHERTY, mentioned below. All these children reached maturity. MR. and MRS. BOWSER both died in Armstrong county.

ROBERT DAUGHERTY BOWSER, son of WILLIAM and MARY (BOWSER) BOWSER, was born in 1842, in Franklin township, Armstrong county, Pennsylvania, and grew to manhood on the home farm. He was educated in the old-time common schools, and chose to devote himself for life to agricultural pursuits. Thus it came to pass that MR. BOWSER led the quiet, uneventful life of a successful farmer, cultivating his land according to the most advanced methods and using the most modern machinery. In his community his word carried weight and he was universally respected as a man of sterling character and enlightened views. The political principles to which MR. BOWSER gave the support of his vote and influence were those advocated by the Democratic party, but he as a rule held aloof from politics. His disposition was friendly, but retiring, and he belonged to no clubs. He was a member and trustee of the Presbyterian Church of Rural Valley, Armstrong county.

MR. BOWSER married, March 27, 1884, MARTHA H. CRAIG, whose family record is appended this biography, and they took up their abode on a farm of one hundred and sixty-five acres near Rural Village, Armstrong county, and there enjoyed twenty-two years of quiet happiness. At the end of that time MR. BOWSER passed away, his death occurring on May 30, 1906, in Baltimore, Maryland. Admirable in every relation of life, he was mourned even as he deserved. Men of the type of ROBERT DAUGHERTY BOWSER seldom emerge into the limelight, but in their own sphere their influence is strong and they leave their communities better than they found them.

(The CRAIG line)

JOHN CRAIG, grandfather of MRS. MARTHA H. (CRAIG) BOWSER, came from Scotland, and married a MISS RALSTON, presumably, in the United States. He and his wife died in Westmoreland county and are buried at Congruity Church.

JAMES CRAIG, son of JOHN CRAIG, was born near Hannastown and grew up on a farm, learning the carpenter’s trade. He married JANE, born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, daughter of JAMES and MARGARET (PROVINES) BROWN, and their daughter, MARTHA H., is mentioned below. By this, 1. MARGARET JANE, widow of JOHN H. WELTY, of Greensburg. 2 and 3. MARTHA H. and SUSAN E., twins, the latter of whom died unmarried. 4. SARAH A., died at the age of fourteen. 5. MARY SLOAN, widow of A. S. SAXMAN, and now residing in Greensburg. 6. ELLA B., widow of S. S. FOSTER, and now lives in Greensburg. MR. CRAIG died in Unity township, and his widow married a second time.

MARTHA H. CRAIG, daughter of JAMES and JANE (BROWN) CRAIG, was born April 11, 1842, on the CRAIG farm , near Hannastown, and received her earliest education at the Jackson School, presided over by Thomas Henry. She next attended school in Harrison county, Ohio, whither her parents removed when she was twelve years old. At the end of five years they returned to the old home farm and there she lived until her marriage, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. Dr. Moorhead, pastor of the First Church of Greensburg. MRS. BOWSER joined this church, which is Presbyterian, (pg. 824) during the pastorate of the Rev. Dr. Smith, and has ever since retained her membership. During her residence in Rural Village she was active in Sunday school work, missionary societies and kindred organizations. After the death of her husband MRS. BOWSER left the farm and returned to Greensburg, where she has ever since resided. She has always been actively interested in church work and charitable enterprises.”
