BOWSER-BOWZER
Burkes’s General Armory give the following as the arms of the Bowser family:
Seated at Stone, Goucester; confirmed by Camden and Carenceux in 1606: Ermine a cross chequey or and gu between four water bougets of the last. Crest: a demi-talbot couped gutee d’or, gorged with a collar or and azure.
The Albemarle County, VA Size Lists for Revolutionary War Service list one James Bowser, 19, who was born in Nansemond and served from there. According to records in the Daughters of the American Revolution Patriot Index, a John Bowser was born in PA in 1740 and died there in 1813. He was married to Mary -. Their son Samuel married Anna Katherine Snyder (Pvt. PA Militia 1786/1789.) One Noah Bowser was born in PA in 1750 and died there in 1830. He married Eunice Ditto. Their son John S. Bowser married Elizabeth Baker (Pvt. 4th Co. Militia.)
The traditional progenitor of our branch of the Bowser family is one John Bowser, Sr., who was born in Virginia about 1764. He fails to appear on the census records after 1850, because he moved west. With regard to his appearance in Tennessee, he is first mentioned on the Sullivan County, TN Tax Lists for 1796 and 1797. A John Bowser is mentioned in the early Washington County, TN land records when he purchased land from Edward Mercer on 13 September 1804. (Washington County Deed Book 7, p. 72.) According to these records, his wife was named Elizabeth -. They had the following issue:
