Looking for information on James Bowser of Nansemond County Virginia who fought with the 1st Virginia Regiment during the Revolutionary War. Bowser was the only African-American from Nansemond County to fight in the war. Bowser returned to Nansemond Co in 1783. Originally, I thought he was given several hundred acres of land by a former slave master, but I now know that in 1834 he and his family was given a land bounty warrant from the Commonwealth of Virginia. Bowser lived around the Driver/Sleepy Hole District of Nansemond County. All of his descendants were free AFrican-Americans. Anyone with information on James Bowser or his descendants, please email Geneen at

Thanks!!
