Can't find a Joseph Bowman who was in the Civil War, actually I found too many Joseph Bowman's. On the 1850 Tennessee census (District 19 Davidson) I found a Joseph Bowman who owned a female black slave, she was 26. again not sure if this your Joseph Bowman. After looking he owned 18.
I also found a Joseph Bowman born 6 Aug 1825 in Stokes, NC. His wife Anna Eliza Redman. His parents were George Bowman b. 1794 and Mary Lilly. That's about all I can find. Keep in touch and if you find more information please let me know.
