Hey Folks, Hope you can help me! My grandmother's grandmother was Rachel Bowman, born about 1800 in Ireland, daughter of a wealthy landowner. My only source says that Robert Brown, an Oxford University student, was working summers at Rachel's father's estate as a gardener; he and Rachel eloped to England around 1817; they emigrated to Pennsylvania about 1819; lived there in Chester or Delaware County until about 1833 when they moved to Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio. Robert died in 1850, believing he had provided for his wife and children, but the 20-acre farm was sold for medical costs of Robert's care, and Rachel and 3 daughters went to McDonough County, IL. Children included George W. Brown (married woman named Caroline 1849, stayed in Ohio), Catherine Brown, (married Nelson G. Porter, died of eating poison rhubarb greens in IL), Sarah Brown (apparently died soon after arrival in IL, unmarried), James Brown (not sure what happened to him - he may have provided home for his mother in Walnut Grove, McDonough Co, IL until he died in Civil War), and Margaret Elizabeth Brown, married George W. Hill in IL; George and their baby son died within a week of each other in 1855 - Margaret about 2 months pregnant with her second child, William Henry Hill. She remarried Robert N. Cunningham, who joined Army, deserted Army and Margaret in Arkansas...never seen again. Margaret died unknown time in IL...what happened to Rachel?? to Margaret??
