Linda, Following is my correspondance file that I accumulated when I was doing that bit of research on the Bowlings. Tnat's about all I have, hope it will help. David Hi, I have that this Eli Bowling died 1 Dec. 1863 at Camp Calvert, KY. I seem to have not made a note of where I got that info, and this isn't my line, but I do collect information on all the Bowlings in Clay county when I find it. My line is Christopher Bolin that married Nancy Baker. They were not married..So you can find Isabella under either name of Wood(s) or Baker.. The later children of Ibby, I think it was the last 3 children were not Eli's. If you want more information On Isabella I will refer to my files.. I may even have what troop Eli was in when he died.. But I do remember he died during the war.. I haven't worked on this family for awhile but will go through my notes and will share what info.. I have.. I have a note on the marriage date that gives an alternate date of marriage as July 24, 1851, Owsley Co, KY. That fits in more with your theory and the children. (And eliminates the same day and month for marriage and death). I also have a notation that Eli died while fighting for the Union in the Civil War -- which may also be in error if he died in 1869. I suppose he could have died of war injuries that long after the war was over. I wonder if Isabella applied for a pension? That would answer a lot of questions. As to the child born in 1874 -- could the child have been a grandchild she raised -- and there is always the possibility that Ibby had a child after she became a widow? The 1874 child may have provided his/her real parents on a marriage license application; or they may be on his/her death certificate. I have never done any research in Owsley County, but Eli and Ibby's parents might be on consent slips for their license; there are also clues if there were bondsmen prior to the marriage. I wish you the best of luck -- the Bowlings are a tough line to work with (I have 2 Bowling lines). Sharon Hi David, There are some Eli/Ibby researchers on Genforum that might have some clues you can pursue: http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?bowlin::baker::6820.html and http://genforum.genealogy.com/baker/messages/16143.html Jess Wilson is no longer on the Clay County e-mail list, but his e-mail address is: jswlsn@prtcnet.org The following has some conflicting death date information, but has some interesting information about the fathers of Ibby's last 3 children (how do you know for sure on something like that?) I wonder if the information if John Jay Dickey's diaries? : http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=gayfamilyfile&id=I010244 Hope this helps -- and if you can contact Jess (he is elderly, and I'm not sure how active he is in genealogy anymore), I know he will have good information. He not only has dates, etc., but he knows all the stories about the characters in the 1800's. Best of luck, Sharon David, You're right -- there are some questions that beg answering. By looking at the census record, It looks like Eli and Isabella might have been married in 1851 and he might have died in 1869? I was looking at the children, the oldest child was born in 1852. However, Isabella could have been married before she married Eli? Eli was already gone in the 1870 census, however, she had a child born in 1869, then in the 1880 census, she had another child that had been born in 1874. I'll take all the help I can get.
