Hi, again, Jim,

For several years, we lived in Rockwall County which is just outside of Van Zandt County and I took my husband and sons to see the memorial that was erected to honor (Chief) John BOWLES, Sr. and the others that fought and died with him in the Battle of Neches. Have you been there? It's just a small clearing in the woods approximately 20 miles east of Canton on the way to Henderson, Rusk County...I guess about the same distance or so from there. There's a sign that you see along the major road about 20 miles from Canton that points you down a smaller road and then another sign about 2 1/2 miles down that road that tells you that you have to get out and walk the last 1/4 mile to the clearing. We arrived shortly before dusk and, truly, as we stood there at the memorial in the clearing it was as if you could hear and feel the spirits of those that fought and died there moving in the trees surrounding it. It was a very touching experience. It has been said that (Chief) John BOWLES, Sr. was of a ruddy Celtic complexion, gray blue eyes, and reddish brown hair. In my mind's eye, I always imagine him looking like my father whom I believe is the Chief's 4th great grandson. I would like to be able to find out for certain but it may not ever be possible to know with certainty. I have other part Native American/Irish/Scottish/Welsh lines primarily in the Cherokee, Choctaw, and Shawnee tribes that are being just as difficult to prove and it is quite probable that they were all connected families from the information that I am collecting so far. The info that some want to discredit about Chief BOWLES being of Shawnee and British lineage as well as his known Cherokee and Celtic includes descent from WATTS lineage that connects to my LOTT - LIGHTFOOT - HATTEN family group out of Virginia to North Carolina to Georgia to Alabama/Mississippi Territory into Louisiana. My 3rd great grandmother, Frances Lucretia "Patsy" LOTT, born: abt. 1802 in Mississippi, is shown by most as the daughter of Absalom LOTT and Martha Jane Dorsey? LIGHTFOOT? and by some as the daughter of Choctaw (Chief) TUSQUAHOMA of Ouachita Parish, Louisiana which was later Jackson Parish where Frances lived as the 1st wife of her husband William HATTEN, born: 1800 in Tar River, Nash County, North Carolina, my 3rd great grandfather. After Frances died during or shortly after the birth of their 9th child, William HATTEN, moved to Winn Parish, Louisiana where he became the first coroner and married 2nd wife, Anna "Annie" NETTLES. He and Frances are known to have had a son, Presley HATTEN, who maintained a Native American ancestral bone house. William HATTEN's great grandmother was a woman named Chelo who was the wife of Thomas UNDERWOOD who was related to a Shawnee (Chief) UNDERWOOD who married into the Shawnee SEALES family. I believe Chelo was also Shawnee but no proof.

Frances Lucretia "Patsy" LOTT had a sister Elizabeth LOTT who married a man named WATTS whose 'white' family may be part of the Native American & 'white' WATTS family that I believe (Chief) John BOWLES, Sr. was descended from. The LOTT and HATTEN families married into the MYRICK-PIERCE family that I believe descends from BOWLES as well as marriages into other families that I descend from that connect with my MYRICK-PIERCE such as HERRINGTON, GRAVES, DICKENS, GRANTHAM, and connecting families such as BARLOW and BENNETT.

The BENNETT connection, I believe, goes back to some of the earlier Native American 'white' traders that married into some of the Cherokee and Choctaw families.

There are so many overlapping lines of these Cherokee/Choctaw/Shawnee and Celtic Irish/Scottish/Welsh and British lines. I think, too, that my McCAIN lineage also may be another that connects. My Mary McCAIN married William Elias SPRADLEY, Sr. of South Carolina from the 1790's into Newton County, Mississippi. Their daughter, Nancy SPRADLEY married Hiram McCARTY and they were the parents of Martha Ann Caroline "Caroline" McCARTY who married Alson Bluford JONES, parents of my maternal grandmother, Rodella "Della" JONES, who married Cicero Lamkin HATTEN, grandson of the aforementioned Frances Lucretia "Patsy" LOTT and William HATTEN.

There are a lot of people who think that the Native Americans did not marry into prominent English & Celtic blood families out of the 1600's in Virginia into North Carolina in the 1700's but that's just not true.

The names of Princess Rose and Chief Obediah may a ring a 'bell' for me but can't remember from where, right offhand but will see if I can come up with anything.

Let's stay in touch and see if we can put some more pieces of the puzzle together.

Oh, I did see some info on one FRANKLIN family that was also descended from BOWLES/BOLES lineage but don't know if it is the same group.

Have a good weekend.

Bellinda Myrick-Barnett
