I'm not sure about a Lonnie Bowles, born in 1898; but there was a Lonnie living in Mockville in 1900 who was born in 1878. Here is the census information for his family in that year:

Bowles, Clementine - wife, W F born Mar 1833 in NC, age 67, 9 children/4 living
Bowles, Laura - daughter, W F born Apr 1867 in NC, age 33, single
Bowles, Lonnie - son, W M born Jan 1878 in NC, age 22, single, farmer
Bowles, Aaron B. - grandson, born Jul 1893 in NC, age 6
