I am seeking more information concerning my great(x3) grandmother ELLEN BOWLES, the daughter of Patrick and Mary (Shea) Bowles [parents names from death rec]. She was born in Ireland (place unknown), and was married to DENNIS GRIFFIN, also of Ireland (date unknown). She died in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on 17 Dec, 1889 at age "76". Age at death obviously in error, as she was age 69 in the 1870 Portsmouth, NH and age 80 in the 1880 one.
- Unknown when she immigrated to the US, but her daughter Ellen Griffin was here by 1851 when she married Patrick Hallasy in Lowell,Massachusetts. Two years later, her husband left, "supposed to be in the south", a notice placed in an 1859 newspaper seeking his whereabouts. Ellen (Griffin) Hallasy was in Nashua, NH at this time, and was here in 1868, when she secondly married John Condon. They afterwards lived in Portsmouth, NH, and resided there until their deaths (except for a brief time ca 1870 in Lawrence, MA). This (1868) marriage record said that Dennis Griffin was a laborer with residence of Ireland, nothing else is known about him.
- The common names make it difficult to pinpoint placements in other census records, or on passenger lists. Hopefully, someone else has come across these families!
