I have a old copy of the genealogical magazine;" Imperial St. Landry; Genealogical and Historical Society" Vol 3 #4. It has a nice write up on Jim Bowie of Alamo fame. I am quoting the magazine;
"Jim Bowie was a very graceful six feet tall, slim but very muscular. Unlike his father who had red hair, his was a chestnut brown. His curly hair and hazel eyes were considered quite becoming to the ladies.
His religious background was Methodist-Presbyterian and he was known to sing at prayer meetings in gatherings throughout Louisiana and Texas.He was at home in any parlor, and was considered quite charming by the ladies. He was well educated for the times and speeches given before the Council of State at San Antonio and at a dinner in New Orleans for General Jackson were quite impressive. It is believed that he was a member of Humble Cottage Lodge #19, (the Opelousas Masonic Lodge) and gained the status of Master Mason in that Lodge. Among his belongings found after the massacre at the Alamo, was his Masonic apron. Although he was know to be a duelist, it is said that he never provoked a fight in his life. He was, however, no man to take advantage of for he could be as fierce as he was gentle."
I have been to the Alamo several times and I am almost sure his knife is there (on display) along with the masonic apron mentioned above.
