Name: Harris Remick
Sex: M
Birth: ABT 1833
Note: 1860 Census - NH, Coos, Jefferson, p 1011 -- Harris Remick. 27; Amy Remick, 33; and five Hicks children - Martha Jane, 15; Mary E., 13; Susan, 9; Adeline A., 6; Jeremiah W., 3. The children are the children of David Hicks, who died in 1859. Possibly Amy Remick is Amy (Bedell) Hicks Remick, wife of David, remarried ??

Joan,
Unfortunately, Ruth could not give me any information on the Amy/Emma and Harris Remick ties. However, I did come across this information and thought I'd share it with you as the Hicks website has your e-mail address listed.
Edith Remick, daughter of Harris Remick has listed on her death record Amy Bedell as Harris' wife. Mrs. Harris Remick, Lancaster, died 1-17-1882 at age 57.
Following the census records....
1850...Whitefield...David, Emma, Martha, Mary, Jeremiah
1860...Jefferson...Harris, Amy, Martha, Mary, Susan, Adeline, Jeremiah
1870...Harris, Emma, Ednah, Betsy, Edith
1880..Harris, Amy, Ednah, Betsy, Edith
At this point it appears that Emma/Amy Bedell is the Amy/Emma Bedell that was also married to David Hicks. The 1900 Census shows Harris living with his son-in-law Henry Young in Lancaster, NH. Ednah never married, and Edith married Benjamin Whitney. I haven't found Betsy anywhere in 1900 or after, nor can I find a death or marriage certificate for her, so I don't know if she died between 1890 and 1900 or married. Neither can I find a Henry Young, so I am hoping that if one of the Hicks girls married a Henry Young and was living in Lancaster it would solve that question.
Thanks--
LouAnn

1850 Census - NH, Coos Co, Whitefield, p 116 - David, 28; Emma, 26; Martha J., 6; Mary E., 3; Jeremiah, 3/12; Chandler, 25.
David died in 1859 and I don't know what happened to his wife but in the 1860 census the children of this family are living with Harris Remick, 27 & Amy Remick, 33 --- NH. Coos, Jefferson, p 1011 - Martha Jane Hicks, 15; Mary E. Hicks, 13; Susan Hicks, 9; Adeline A. Hicks, 6; Jeremiah W. Hicks, 3.
The naming pattern in this family makes it very likely that they are in this line. Evidently the 1st Jeremiah, b 1850, died, and they used the name again in 1857 ???
--------------------
A 10-11-99 email from Ruth Anderson says David's wife's name was Amy Bedell. Could this be the Amy of Harris and Amy Remick??? Ruth says "Emma" was a nickname for Amy ( cites History of Jetterson?) but knows nothing of a second marriage to Harris Remick.

Name: John Hicks
Sex: M
Birth: ABT 1780 in Jefferson, Coos, NH 1
Death: 16 NOV 1846 2
Note:
This John appears to have been born in Jefferson, eldest son of Benjamin, to have relocated to Oxford County, ME for a time, and then returned to Coos Co again. There is a gravestone in Jefferson for John, died Nov 1846, age 66 -- which puts his birth about 1780. This fits with the male 16-26 in Benjamin's home in the 1800 census. (There is a suggestion in the History of Jefferson that he might be a younger brother of Benjamin but the differential in documented dates makes that seem unlikely.) There are suggestions he moved to Oxford Co, ME, sometime around 1802?
His marriage record to Charlotte Gotham in 1806 is found in the Jefferson, NH Town records and he is called "of Jefferson" at that time. SInce Jefferson was his home town that does not preclude the idea that he may have tried a move to Maine and returned for a bride. Although the number of Johns in Oxford Co is confusing, I think he is the John who had two children in Hebron, ME in 1807 and 1809. I'm not sure where he was in 1810. By 1820 he is back in NH.
1820 Census - NH, Coos, Jefferson, p 512 - 410010-11010 -- John is 26-45 (would be 40), his wife is also. There are 7 children - 5 boys and 2 girls, most of whom are unaccounted for at this time. Age 10-16 (born 1804-1810) are 1 boy and 1 girl, which fits Jeremiah, b 1807 and Adeline, b 1809. Then there are 5 children under 10 - 4 boys and 1 girl who are slowly getting identified. I'm still not sure on a son (prob died before 1820) and a daughter, but Benjamin,Thomas, and Ransom seem definite.
1830 Census - NH, Coos, Jefferson, p 339 - 1321101~~~~//0000211~~~~. John is listed as 40-50 (he would be 50) and his wife as 30-40 . The oldest son (Jeremiah? b 1807 is now 20-30, would be 23). Three of the 4 boys b 1810-1820 are still alive/at home - 2 are 10-15, meaning born 1815 - 1820 (Thomas & Ransom) and 1 is 15-20 (b. 1810-1815 - Benjamin). There are another 3 boys 5-10 (b 1820-1825 - this fits David 2nd, John and Chandler) and 1 under 5 (b 1825-1830 - Royal) There are two daughters 20-30, and an unknown extra female 40-50?? (or his wife is 40-50 and the extra is 30-40) (note that other records suggest both a Dolly & and Charlotte who should have been in 0-5 category)
1840 Census - NH, Coos, Lancaster, p 257 - 00120001~~~//0210001~~~~. John is now 50-60 and his wife is 40-50. There appear to still be 6 children at home -- 3 sons (1 10-15 and 2 15-20 - David, John, and Chandler ??) and 3 young females (possibly granddaughters??) - 1 10-15 and 2 5-10) who were not there in 1830. --- the Dolly, the Charlotte. etc ???
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------
There are several Hicks listed here as potential or possible children of John who evidently don't belong here --- but I don't know where they do belong yet and I don't want to lose the information on them. I am also missing a couple of older ones, judging by census analysis.
I also am missing an 1850 census record for much of this family. John has presumably died in 1846, but Charlotte is apparently still alive and there should still be some younger children to be accounted for.
