THE MARTIN FAMILY

The William and Mary Quarterly. Second Series, Volume 10. 1930

This is an article on the ancestry of John Martin of England and Goochland County, Virginia, who was the father of Mary Martin who married Matthew Vaughan. As I understood the material in this article, Mary Martin's ancestry was as follows:

Henry Martin of Bristol , England, married Mary Sparkes, daughter of Richard Sparkes (born Withy Bush House, Pembroke, England, April 16, 1658) and his wife who, when she married Richard Sparkes, was the widow of Erasmus Carr. Henry Martin's parents were Roger Martin and Hudson, daughter of John Hudson.

Henry Martin and Mary Sparkes were the parents of John Martin whose will, proved in Goochland County, Virginia, in 1787, mentioned three children:

1. Henry Martin. He was in England when his father wrote the will, and is said to have died without issue on a voyage to or from England.
2. Mary Martin who married, before 1767, Matthew Vaughan. John Martin nominated to be his executors his "son Hudson Martin and son- in-law Matthew Vaughan" .
3. Hudson Martin. He was a lieutenant in the Revolutionary War. He married Jane Lewis, daughter of Nicholas Lewis and Mary Walker, daughter of Dr. Thomas Walker, the famous explorer. This Hudson Martin died in Nelson County, Virginia and his descendants are the only descendants of John Martin of Goochland County to have the surname Martin.

The will of John Hudson of the City of BristoI, EngIand, was proved October 13, 1725, and mentions his son-in-law Roger Martin, grandsons George and Henry Martin, granddaughter Mary Martin, great grandsons Hudson Martin and Roger Martin, and great granddaughter Mary Martin. The grandson Henry Martin was the father of John Martin of Goochland County, therefore, John Martin was the great grandson of the decedent, John Martin of Bristol.

So - Roger Martin married a daughter of John Hudson of Bristol , and had children George Martin, Henry Martin, and Mary Martin. This Henry Martin married Mary Sparkes and had children:

___________

Richard HORNBUCKLE was orphaned at the age of 12 and was brought up by Joseph Hemming, who was named his guardian in his mother's will in 1709.
His first appearance in the records came when he asked the court to let him name his own guardian on 28 July 1714. The court refused, saying that his mother had appointed Hemming to that position and the court could not over rule her.
Richard next appears when he leased his portion of the 200 acres inherited from his mother to John Smith on 26 June 1720. At that time, he was still living in Washington Parish, Westmoreland County. Around this time he married. His wife's name is not know for certain, but was probably was Elizabeth. Sometime between 1720 and 1740, he moved with his family to Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, Virginia, where he spent the rest of his life. So far as is known, he never owned property in Stafford County.
Richard died in Overwharton Parish on 29 July 1747. His inventory, filed 8 December 1747 with the Stafford County court, showed his possessions to include two cows and calves, one old horse, one mare, some old pewter, one chest, two stools, one table, an earthen pot, some old lumber, a washing tub, a pail, two piggens, a partel of old iron, one bed, bedstead and cord, one stack of fodder and five barrels of corn, all worth a total of ten pounds, 15 shillings, six Pence. Priscilla BOWS****** was administrator of the estate.
Elizabeth Hornbuckle, probably his widow, married John SMITH on 31December 1747.
