Josephine (Bower) Dunsmuir 1859-1901

I am a volunteer a Oakland California's Dunsmuir Historic Estate. We are looking for information about Mr. Dunsmuir's wife.

Josephine Bower was born in New York in the year 1859. She married Waller Wallace. She moved to San Francisco some time in the 1870's. There she met and fell in love with Alexander Dunsmuir, son of British Columbia's wealthiest man Robert Dunsmuir. The Dunsmuir family owned coal mines railroads, shipping and lumber mills.

Alexander and Josephine married in San Pablo California in December of 1899. They went on their honeymoon when Alexander passed away from alcoholic meningitis 40 days into the marriage.

Josephine returned home to her brand new mansion and lived there for 18 months until her death of lung cancer.

To see Josephine Bower's "Dunsmuir Mansion" please go to the following website. http://www.dunsmuir.org or http://members.aol.com/dunsmuir

We in the history committee are looking for any information about Josephine (Bower)Wallace-Dunsmuir. Any photographs of Josephine are greatly desired.

Thank you.
Michael Greenslade
